On the night of May 2, South Central Myanmar was struck by Cyclone Nargis. Those living around the Irrawaddy Delta were the hardest hit, as of May 13, over 34,000 people had been confirmed dead. Another 28,000 are missing, and numbers are expected to rise. Those in the disaster areas have lost their homes and are lacking food and water, however, because the roads are blocked with debris and the phone lines are not working, it is difficult to reach those in need.
The Japanese government has sent 64 million yen worth of emergency supplies including tents and generators, and has offered USD 10 million in emergency support.
The City of Hiroshima and the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation have been moved to give aid to the victims, not only because the largeness of the situation calls to us, but also because it is another way that we can take steps towards the goal of everlasting world peace. We hope that you will support us in our efforts, and provide a donation to help the disaster victims.
